Three Notes, Endless Possibilities

5 min · Beginner · Creative

How to play

Choose three notes: A, C and E. Together they spell an A minor chord, so almost anything you play will sound good.

Use only those three notes, anywhere on the neck. Put on a drone or a slow backing track if you like, or just play unaccompanied.

The notes are fixed, so the interest has to come from everything else. Change the rhythm. Play long notes, then short ones. Leave gaps. Try bends, slides and hammer-ons.

Challenge

Create three distinct melodies from the same three notes. Each should feel like a different tune, and you should be able to play each one again.

Tips

If you get stuck, change only one thing: the rhythm, the octave, or the articulation.
