The Genre Swap

10 min · Intermediate–Advanced · Creative

How to play

Pick a song you know well. Decide on a different genre to play it in: reggae, blues, bossa nova, metal, country, funk.

Think about what defines that genre. It might be the rhythm, the tempo, the tone or the way chords are voiced. Apply those traits to the song.

You don't need to play the song exactly, just enough that it is recognisable in its new style.

Challenge

Play the same song in two very different genres back to back, then pick which one you prefer.

Tips

Rhythm usually carries a genre more than the notes do. Start there.
